Migration issues

The most important information is summarized below. For more information and how to apply for residence permit, see the Swedish Migration Agency’s webpage (https://www.migrationsverket.se/English/Private-individuals/Studying-in-Sweden.html)

  • If you are to study at a university in Sweden for a period longer than three months, you need to apply for a residence permit for higher education.
  • If you have a residence permit for studies in higher education and have completed a university programme of at least two semesters in Sweden, you can receive a residence permit to seek employment or investigate the possibilities of starting your own company. You can only be granted a residence permit that is valid for twelve months. You cannot obtain a residence permit that is for more or less than twelve months. It is also not possible to extend the permit
  • If the person who received a residence permit for studies is already in Sweden, you as a family member can submit your own online application afterwards. (You can also apply at the same time.)
  • The permit must be issued before you travel to Sweden.
  • Requirements for residence permit
    • Valid passport
    • Admitted to full-time studies
    • Paid tuition fee
    • Able to support yourself financially. For applications received by the Swedish Migration Agency on or after 1 January 2023, the living expense requirement is at least SEK 9,450 per month (1 semester of 6 months = 6*9,450 SEK = 46,700 SEK). For 2022, the amount is 8,694 SEK. You must show that you have secured your financial support for the period for which you are applying for a residence permit. This means that you must show that you have money available through personal bank assets, scholarship, student aid from your country of origin, sponsorship (may not, in most cases, be a private person) or income from employment. You can combine different forms of financing in your application. If family members will stay with you, other requirements apply.
    • Fee for application for student residence permit: 1,500 SEK.
    • Fee for family members of the student: 1,500 SEK/adult and 750SEK/child under the age of 18.
    • If you have a residence permit and will continue studying after your permit expires, you must apply to extend it before your current permit expires. Apply no earlier than six months before your current permit expires.
